Spirit of BC Committees have been formed in communities around BC to help develop benefits for areas outside of Vancouver and Whistler as we lead up to the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games. The Spirit of BC Committees provide communities with an influential and local point-of-contact with the Province of British Columbia and 2010 LegaciesNow. The committees will be a strategic force in their communities, will build community spirit and pride, and focus on developing strategies to realize a wide range of opportunities associated with British Columbia hosting the games.
The Powell River/Ayjoomixw Spirit of BC Community Committee is working on a number of initiatives for engaging in the Olympic process in the fields of arts and culture, sports, literacy, volunteerism and economic development. We are looking at the Olympics coming to BC in 2010 and asking "How can Powell River benefit when BC is on the world stage?"
There are many areas in which the Powell River/Ayjoomixw committee is focusing it's efforts to accomplish this...
- Developing a strong Arts and Culture sector
- Increasing Sports and Recreation opportunities in the community
- Increasing Literacy in the community
- Promoting Volunteerism in the community
- Helping local businesses to gain from the Olympics by getting their products and services onto the world stage
- Developing and promoting local facilities to host Provincial and National events
- Increasing access for persons with disabilities
- Assisting the Tla'amin First Nation to develop opportunities for their people
- Fostering local enthusiasm for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games
